A Morning Routine for More Words

In the last blog post I talked about three habits that help you to be a more productive writer. Today, I’d like to take that a little deeper.

Why is getting up at the same time every day so important?

Yes, it sets the body clock and helps you get more sleep easily, and that’s very important for creative people.

However, there is an even better reason: Humans are creatures of habit.

And you can stack habits onto one another until you can do a number of things every morning without having to think about it.

My morning routine goes something like that:

Get up at 6m.
Turn on the computer.
Go to the bathroom.
Get something to drink.
Log into the computer (it takes a while to power up)
Call up my meditation page.
Meditate for 20 minutes.
Open my LibreOffice file.
Write for 30+ minutes. (Which usually puts almost 1k words into my file.)
Have breakfast.
Go to work.

I don’t have to think about any of that because I do it every morning. Even on the weekend (except getting up a little later and skipping the work part). It’s easy because my brain is on autopilot when I move from step to step.

This has been called Habit Stacking. And it’s incredibly useful, because it allows me to start my day by being creative, and putting words into my story, without any resistance at all.

And consider this: Doing this 7 days a week adds up to almost 7k words! Four weeks give you a novella! Three months a novel! That’s the power of habit.

In addition, writing every morning makes me feel accomplished before I even have to go to work!

It’s a great feeling.

And it starts with getting up early and then tacking on more habits. It’s easy – give yourself a week per habit you want to add.

Here are some tapping suggestions to help you ease into a morning routine:

Even though I am a writer and artist, and I cannot schedule my creativity like that, I’m okay the way I am, and I’m open to experiment with this.

Even though I’m so individual that I abhor routines, I’m okay the way I am, and I can see how easy this kind of morning habit might make writing.

Even though I’ve never managed to stick to any routine, I’m okay the way I am, and I now allow myself to be intrigued by this easy writing habit.

Your turn:

Which habit would you like to add to your morning?
