How Jealousy Kills Creativity

Jealousy

Jealousy

Of course, we all know that feeling of wanting what someone else has.

We want to have just as much success, sell as many copies, get such a huge advance or become a bestselling author like someone we see doing it.

And when someone has what we want, we can feel envy or jealousy.

Envy isn’t really bad.

It tells us what we desire. It can even give a new push to our work, create a new intensity, and a new goal. And that is a good thing.

If you feel envy for something, you should notice what it is about, maybe write it down, and then go do the work to get to your new goal. Maybe you have even discovered a new role model who inspires you.

Jealousy, on the other hand, carries anger with it.

And that is a bad thing.

Because anger can kill creativity.

It doesn’t always do so. I’ve written a few stories out of anger, after reading one bad story too many. That anger prodded me into doing something that felt good. And that is what anger is supposed to do.

Anger shows you something you dislike, and gives you the energy to do something about it. No more, no less.

But anger turning into resentment is damaging. When the energy of action gets blocked and just sits there, roiling and seething, without being released by actively doing something, it poisons your body, mind and soul.

This kind of stagnant anger shifts you into judging, comparing and putting down others, just so you can feel better about yourself.

And that is not a mindset which is helpful for writing and being creative.

The moment you decide to do something – even if you insert that person into a book and kill him or her off – action starts to chip away at the resentment, and you will return to being creative and writing.

Of course, you can also tap.

Even though I’m so jealous because they have what I want, and I don’t, I’m okay the way I am, and I now choose to put ass in seat and work to get what they have.

Even though it makes me jealous and angry to see what they have when I don’t, it burns, I’m still okay the way I am, and I now choose to channel that anger into writing.

Even though it’s so easy to hate when I’m jealous, I’m okay the way I am, and I now choose to let go of that hate and work towards my new goal.
