The Publishing Author’s Mindset – Formatting

Once your story has been edited enough (and really, don’t spend too much time on that), you will want to get it ready for publishing.

And that means formatting.

Ebook formatting has become very easy. Tools like Jutoh or Vellum make it possible for anyone to do it on their own. Easily.

Even formatting for print is not rocket science. It’s a little more complicated because your file must fit clear specifications for the Print on Demand service you choose to work with. And it should be a PDF.

But let me reassure you: It is doable.

And you can outsource it, if you wish, but of course, that means spending money. You might eventually choose to do so anyway, to save yourself time and worry – but honestly, there isn’t a lot to worry about when formatting.

So once again, the focus is on mindset. And the possible overwhelm that the process might cause for you.

Let me repeat:

It is entirely doable. I’ve done it. Lots of others have done it. You can do it.

The most overwhelming part of formatting is this:

You are turning your story into a real book.

Something that readers will read, or even hold in their hands.

Something tangible.

Real.

Your story transforms into that magical thing you used to stare at in bookstores, libraries or the Amazon catalogue. Something that only happens to real authors.

And suddenly, you’re a real author to, and you are making this transformation for yourself.

It can feel overwhelming. It can feel entirely undeserved and that you’re faking it.

And yet, it has never been easier to reach readers. That’s what your story’s purpose is, to find readers. It has never been easier to take that step.

So don’t do it for yourself or your ego. Do it for your story. And for your readers. They deserve to read your story.

It is time.

Here’s some tapping to ease that overwhelm:

Even though it’s so overwhelming to actually format my own story, and turning it into a real book, I’m totally okay the way I am, and I now choose to do this for my story.

Even though there is a learning curve in formatting and using the new programs, I’m totally okay the way I am, and I choose to make learning this easy and fun.

Even though it’s such a scary thought that I can simply format my story and it’ll become a real, tangible book, or at least an ebook, I’m totally okay the way now, and I choose to enjoy being a real author.

Your Turn:
How do you feel about formatting your own story?
How do you feel about learning to handle new programs?
What happened while you were tapping?
And finally – what are you creating right now?
Please share in a comment.
