The Success Experiment

Successful Author

Today, I’m starting a new series here on the blog. Together we’ll explore at least a dozen typical blocks to success, from the perspective of a writer. And of course, I’ll give you some tapping pointers to work through each of them.

I have chunked those blocks into three different categories:

1) Beliefs about success itself

Depending on what we believe about our own success, we can reach it easily or struggle with it. And since you’re here, I suppose you’re struggling with it just as are most people.

2) Beliefs about successful people

If we carry unpleasant beliefs about those people who do have success in a way that you would like to have, well, there are safety programs at work that will prevent you from becoming such a person as that goes against values that you hold. So we need to examine those beliefs – and possibly shift them – so you can reach the success you want.

3) Blocks that originate in family system dynamics

We are all bound into family systems, or at least one of them. And those systems have explicit rules (as well as many, many unspoken ones) that are difficult if not impossible to break. We’ll deal mostly with the unspoken ones that can be shifted and changed so that the system itself no longer prevents you from earning the success you want.

In addition to all these blocks, I believe that success is a very individual thing.

For example, there is a bestselling author who has decided he wants to live on a boat and sail around the world. That is his personal dream, and being able to live it because he’s doing so well with his books is a tremendous success. (Can you guess who that is?)

There is another bestselling author who signed a deal last year about writing 11 novels and getting a huge (7-figure) advance on it. This author knows exactly what he’ll be doing for the next ten years, and that’s a tremendous success for him.

So before we actually start in on the series and explore individual blocks, it is a good thing to get clarity for yourself. What is the kind of success you want to reach as author? What’s the huge, big thing, and are there smaller successes on the way to the big one?

Mine is to write well enough and sell enough books to create an income, together with my coaching work. And I know exactly where I want to live once I reach that success. Each additional book I publish is a small success on the way to the big one.

Feel free to take some time to think about it and then write it out. Maybe you feel like creating a picture about your personal success and hanging it above your writing space. Make this particular success truly yours. Own it. Let it inspire you.

It will probably also make you feel uncomfortable and raise many “yes, but what if…?”. And that’s what we’ll tap about right now.

Even though I really want success, and I’m not entirely sure what it is that I want, and that feels confusing and bad, I’m totally okay the way I am, and I now give myself permission to explore what exactly success means to me.

Even though it’s so hard to figure out what success is for me, instead of just taking ideas from other people, I’m still totally okay the way I am, and I now choose to spend time to get clear on my own success.

Even though I never thought about what exactly success would mean to me, I just assumed that selling lots of books and making lots of money would be it, I’m totally okay the way I am, and I now choose to get much more specific and clear on what I declare to be my success.

Your Turn:
What kind of success would make you feel very happy?
How do you feel when you think about that?
What happened while you were tapping?
And finally – what are you writing right now?
Would love to hear from you!
