Every family has rules about what its members can do.
Let’s imagine Lee. Traditionally, the men in his family have been carpenters, bricklayers or other kinds of craft people. There is an unspoken rule in his family that this kind of hands-on labor is the only right way to earn money.
Now, Lee has a brilliant imagination and started writing mysteries even as a teenager. His English teacher has been encouraging him, and his friends love his amazing plot twists and psychological insight. When he’s 23, he learns about self-publishing, and uploads his first book to Amazon KDP.
And he sells about 100 copies, and then his sales dry up. It seems his friends have all bought the book, and now he can’t reach more readers. He studies marketing, but nothing he does really helps to improve his sales. They hover at single digits every month.
Lee is frustrated and disappointed by his low sales.
That’s because subconsciously, he’s obeying the family rule: You can only earn real money by hands-on labor. Which books are not.
The trick to overcoming this block is fairly simple, but you have to know it even exists before you can.
If Lee were my client, I’d also ask him about the men in his family. Maybe there has been an unsuccessful writer before, and he resonates with that fate, in addition to running head on against a family rule.
For you, check with your own family rules. Are you allowed to make money with books? Good money? Is it okay if these books are genre, fantasy, SF, or even Romance? You can bring up the topic of books at a family meeting and then just listen to the casual talk about them. It could reveal a hidden rule your family has about writing and books.
And if there is any rule that’s hindering you in your success as author – it needs to be changed.
Here are some EFT tapping suggestions to help you do that. Change the words to fit your own family’s rules – I can only offer a very general version here.
Even though my family doesn’t allow earning money as author, I’m totally okay the way I am, and I now give myself permission to add that kind of income to my family system.
Even though in our family men / women can only earn money as […], I’m a really good writer, and I now choose to give myself permission to have financial success and still be a member of my family.
Even though there is a family rule that’s preventing me from making good money with my books, I’m totally okay the way I am, and I’m now rewriting that rule to include making money from my writing.
Do you have problems earning money with your books?
Which family rules have you discovered?
What happened while you were tapping?
And finally – what are you creating right now?
Would love to hear from you!
